A controversial plan for a homeless hostel in West Vale has been withdrawn at the 11th hour.

The plan was due to be considered by Calderdale Council tonight but was suddenly withdrawn less than 24 hours before the meeting.

The Ashley Foundation was seeking planning consent to convert the Old Brassworks on Maude Street in West Vale into a 32-bed hostel.

Up to 100 homeless people a year will be referred there by Kirklees and Calderdale housing departments.

The complaints largely related to the location of the proposed hostel to the nearby school, West Vale Primary.

The unsuitability of the area and lack of public amenities were also mentioned.

The objections came residents and nearby businesses
