A SPECIAL church service will be held in West Yorkshire to remember all those killed and badly injured on the county’s roads

The service has been jointly organised by Brighouse-based SCARD (Support and Care after Road Death and Injury) and CADD (Campaign against Drinking and Driving) and will be held at Leeds Parish Church on Sunday November 21 at 3pm.

Hundreds of people bereaved or injured on the roads attend the service each year.

It focuses on personal experiences and observations. It involves photographs and readings from the victims’ families and those who have been injured on our roads.

During the Oakleaf Remembrance Service leaves bearing the names of loved ones are read out during the service.

It will be attended by leading civic dignitaries in West Yorkshire along with members of the police and the other emergency services.

A remembrance quilt which commemorates many names of those who have died on West Yorkshire’s roads will be displayed at the rear of the church. Each piece on the quilt was stitched by members of deceased’s families.

Rector of Leeds Canon Tony Bundock, who will lead the service, said: “This annual service is always a very moving event providing comfort and support for those bereaved or injured as a result of a road incident.

“It highlights the importance of care for those whose lives have been blighted in such tragic circumstances, as well as the wider issues of careful driving and road safety in general.”

Anyone wanting an oakleaf of remembrance completed on their behalf should phone SCARD or contact Leeds Parish Church.

For those who attend the service there will be oak leaves available to fill in when they arrive.

The first service was held 16 years ago.
