BLUNDERING workmen who covered the wrong New Mill house with scaffolding have now offered to repay the family - by repairing their guttering.

Kirklees Council tenant Tammy Williams could not believe her eyes when she returned home from a shopping trip last Thursday to find her home on Royds Avenue completely cocooned in a two-storey metal frame.

Now after admitting it was a mistake, council bosses have decided to leave the scaffolding in place and repair the guttering.

Tammy, 29, said: "I think they are shame-faced and are now trying to find a reason why it needs to be there.

"I am pleased because when we asked for new guttering they said we couldn't have it done.

"But I am still not impressed with the mess in the garden."

She said workmen came to remove the scaffolding on Saturday.

But after they had dismantled it at the back of the house she was informed the structure at the front was staying.

The married mother-of-three said: "They went back to the van and produced paperwork saying they had decided to put new guttering up, even though nobody knew anything about it and they said we couldn't have it before.

"They're just doing it now to save face. It's all an excuse."

She said she had also been told she would be compensated for the damage caused in her back garden when a tin of paint was knocked over and scaffolders used plastic sheeting she was using to decorate her home to cover the garden.

She added: "All they have done is take the scaffolding down.

"They have not really tried to clean up the mess they made.

"But it is a big relief. At least now I can shut my gate."
