IT may be Huddersfield's untidiest street ...

Wood Street in the town centre has been dubbed an eyesore.

Mounds of broken bottles, piles of filled plastic binbags and overflowing wheeled bins greeted office workers as they walked along the back street on Monday morning.

And the situation was just the same on Monday afternoon, when the Examiner visited.

"It is an absolute eyesore. Some of this rubbish can't have just been caused over the weekend," said one caller.

Complaints about Wood Street - connecting Kirkgate and Northumberland Street - have been frequent over the past couple of years, with callers to the Examiner complaining about the filth and food waste attracting vermin.

Kirklees Council has said it has battled to keep the street clean after the weekend deluge of dirt from hot food takeaways and weekend drinkers.

A Kirklees spokesman said Wood Street was as clean as a whistle now. Everything had been cleared and the bins had been emptied yesterday morning. "Other people cause the rubbish and council workers have to clear it up," he added.
