A man complained to police that his cannabis had been stolen – and found himself under arrest for producing the drug.

Daft Aaron Chambers was even branded by his own solicitor as ‘crackers’ in his actions which led to officers discovering thousands of pounds worth of skunk cannabis.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of producing a controlled drug of class B when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that the drugs were discovered when police attended at his home in Eldon Road, Marsh, on October 9.

He told magistrates: “Police attended at the address in response to a report of a man shouting for the police.

“Mr Chambers was there and said somebody had broken in and stolen cannabis plants.”

Police searched the house and uncovered nine plants in the cellar together with equipment including heating lamps and extractor filters.

Mr Bozman said that the estimated yield of the strong skunk variety of the drug was 524 grams. The potential street value of the cannabis was over £4,000.

Chambers, now of Tudor Street in Slaithwaite, admitted in interview growing the drug for his own personal use.

He said his door had been broken to get into the house and somebody had taken some cannabis, although the quantity of the drugs stolen was unknown.

Bob Carr, mitigating, said a report was needed on his client before sentencing due to his high utilisation of the drug.

He added: “A man shouting that his cannabis has been stolen is fairly ridiculous. It’s like an armed robber calling police to say that his gun has been stolen – it’s crackers!”

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until January 13 and granted Chambers unconditional bail.
