Relentless fly-tipping in Fartown has sparked a call for action by Kirklees Council.

Alder Street resident Denis Mott says he is at his wit’s end over rubbish dumping in an alley behind his home.

The pensioner says the problem has been going on for more than a year and is getting worse.

He wants the council to clean up the area and ‘educate’ residents about the dangers and nuisance of fly-tipping.

Items such as fridge-freezers, settees, TVs, shopping trolleys and upturned wheelie bins litter the alleyway. Some have been there for months.

“I ring the council on a regular basis, asking them to do something but nothing happens,” said Mr Mott, 67. “We have had council rangers round to look at the situation but nothing gets done.”

Mr Mott has lived in Alder Street since 2002, but says the fly-tipping problem started about a year ago.

“And it is getting worse,” he said. “I know it’s not exactly a priority, but some of the stuff is dangerous and the council should do something.

Residents of Alder Street, Fartown, angry over the rubbish dumped by fellow residents.

“Sometimes I’ve had to move things out of the way just to get my car down the road.

“Schoolchildren use that alley and sometimes they will discard things. But the really big stuff is being dumped by adults who should know better.

“I want to see the council clear the area and send out a letter to all residents advising them not to fly-tip.”

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “The council is aware of a problem with fly-tipping in this area. Due to the nature of the items dumped it has been difficult to identify the perpetrator. However, the investigation has recently progressed and we have contacted a possible suspect and are hopeful that the fly-tipping will now stop.”
