UPPER Cumberworths carnival king and queen gave a royal flavour to its communal bonfire party last night as they lit the blue touch paper.

Max Phillips and Caitlin Thomas carried out their duties at the village playing fields on Eunice Lane, after having been crowned king and queen in the summer carnival.

Rebecca Ward, a member of Cumberworth Community Association, said this was the 35th annual bonfire event.

Its life began as a celebration of the Queens silver jubilee in 1977.

Rebecca said: Attendances have fluctuated over the years but we are hoping that around 150 villagers will turn out.

We will be serving bacon sandwiches, parkin and toffee with a firework display at 7pm.

Money raised helps fund the summer carnival.
