More than three years after Huddersfield’s iconic George Hotel was bought for a knockdown sum it is still no closer to opening its doors for business.

Dentist and businessman Dr Altaf Hussain bought the landmark Victorian building for around £900,000 in April 2013.

Dr Hussain had ambitious plans to turn the grade II listed building into a boutique hotel with 11 apartments and a rooftop bar.

He carried out some work but last December put the building on the market for £3 million – and it remains unsold.

Nothing has been said about the future of the once-proud building and Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman wants answers.

New owner of The George Hotel, Huddersfield, Dr Altaf Hussain with the keys to the town centre landmark.

Mr Sheerman had originally hoped a major investor would restore it to its former glory and spend a large sum on turning it into a high quality, four-star hotel.

Dr Hussain’s plans would have cut the number of hotel rooms from 60 to 30 and would have resulted in a dental surgery on the first floor and a health spa and treatment rooms in the basement.

Although Kirklees Council planners gave the go-ahead Dr Hussain decided to sell up. He put the building on the market in December last year through Leeds-based property agent Christie & Co for an asking price of £3 million.

But more than six months on there have been no takers.

It is understood any prospective buyers have baulked at the cost of the purchase, potential restrictions of the building’s use and the lack of parking spaces.

Mr Sheerman said: “I am deeply disappointed.

“At the time of its sale I was working a crowd-funding project to develop it but it was snatched from under our eyes at the eleventh hour.

“We were told that a major investor was going to turn it into a four-star hotel but this has not happened and I do wonder what will happen to this beautiful historic building in St George’s Square which is at the heart of our town.

“I am deeply disappointed. I would do anything I can, behind the scenes, to breathe new life into it.”

Neither Dr Hussain nor anyone from Christie & Co wished to comment.
