SLEET and snow hit Huddersfield yesterday - and there's more to come.

Parts of the town saw some slight falls of sleet and snow throughout the afternoon.

And Huddersfield meteorologist Paul Stevens, of Salendine Nook, believes we could well be in line for a white Christmas!

He made the same forecast back in October and now others are backing his prediction.

Bookies have slashed the odds on snow falling on Christmas Day dramatically.

The chances of snow in London on December 25 are now just 11/4, while in Scotland it is only 5/6.

"Despite the Met Office saying it would be a `green mild Christmas' only a week ago, the Examiner's own forecast for a possible white Christmas back in October still looks good," said Mr Stevens.

"Although still days away, most forecasting computer models are now coming together to indicate that a cold spell will begin on Christmas Eve.

"A deep low looks set to develop south of Iceland and then move into Scandinavia, with strong north-west winds developing behind a cold front, moving south on Christmas Eve.

"So if you don't like the cold get your shopping done before the 24th.

"It will also be very windy mid-week onwards with near gale force winds for Huddersfield.

"But it will become very mild for a time.

"Once the heavy rain has cleared early on Christmas Eve there will be a mixture of blustery showers with temperatures around 5 ºC (41ºF).

"These will be gradually falling through the day and the strong wind will make it feel bitterly cold everywhere.

"Christmas Day will bring a mixture of sunny spells, bitter cold north or north-west winds and a scattering of snow showers."

And the expert warned: It will get worse.

Mr Stevens added: "Some really interesting weather looks set to develop towards new year when potentially some very cold air could bring more significant snowfall.

"But this must be viewed with caution so far out."
