A festival has celebrated Huddersfield’s rich history with a series of talks and speeches.

The week-long festival kicked off with a focus on the centenary of Huddersfield rugby league icon, Harold Wagstaff.

But the climax of the festival was on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the election in 1964 Huddersfield-born Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

Actor Colin Smith re-enacted the speech ‘White heat of technology’ speech which led on to the Labour Party winning the general election of 1964.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman later shared his memories of the Wilson election during a talk and discussion group at Huddersfield University.

Dr Stephen Dorril, who has written about Wilson’s time in office, said: “With an election due next year it will interesting to reassess Wilson in the light of what has happened in politics in recent years. He remains highly popular with the public and it is noticeable that some former critics have become much more sympathetic to what he did in office.”
