He's the most vocal Parliamentarian of the year – almost.

Barry Sheerman was the second more vocal MP in the House of Commons chamber, second only to Speaker John Bercow who presides over the debates.

On the day Parliament dissolved and the general election campaign officially got underway, the statistics can be analysed.

Barry, who has been Huddersfield’s MP in the last Parliament, spoke 201 times and said: “After 10 years on a Select Committee I decided I wanted to do the chamber of the House of Commons really well and I’m there most days. It’s about persistence.”

The job of the Speaker has been at the forefront of debate with efforts to replace the Speaker falling last week.

But would Mr Sheerman fancy a stint in the Speaker’s chair?

“No, it’s boring as hell” he said. “I want to be a true Parliamentarian not sitting in a chair moderating for hours.”

Colne Valley’s Conservative MP Jason McCartney spoke 71 times and is ranked 57th out of 650 MPs. His last speech was on March 18 on Syria.

While Kirklees boasts one of the most active speakers, it also claims one of the least active Commons speakers.

The survey, based on statistics compiled by They Work For You, shows Batley and Spen’s Mike Wood spoke just twice and is ranked 629th. His last speech in Commons was on December 17 on the Post Office.

Dewsbury’s Simon Reevell spoke four times to be ranked 617th and last spoke on March 24 on the eligibility of members to vote on issues in the House of Commons and presented a petition on behalf of the “residents of Dewsbury”.

Calder Valley’s Craig Whittaker spoke 14 times to be ranked 502nd. His last speech was on March 9 on Todmorden and Calder high schools.
