Yorkshire has been the birthplace of many a great man (and woman).

But according to David Cameron, the greatest living Yorkshireman is none other than former foreign secretary, MP and Leader of the House William Hague.

Hague, born in Rotherham, was no doubt touched by the praise, made during Cameron's speech at this year's Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.

Cameron said: "All I can say is this: that boy became a fine Parliamentarian, a brilliant Foreign Secretary, our greatest living Yorkshireman and someone to whom I owe an enormous debt of gratitude: William Hague."

The remark caused outrage on Twitter, with many people proposing alternatives to Hague for the title of the greatest living Yorkshireman, from Brian Blessed to Patrick Stewart.
