TODAY is your last chance to put your treasured pet forward for a top prize!

That beloved animal your family lavishes so much love on could be crowned the best pet in Huddersfield.

And it could save you money - by earning its own food!

A year's supply of Hero Tiger pet food, courtesy of Asda, is the top prize in our Pet Idol contest.

Today is officially the closing date of this popular competition - but we can hang on for last-minute entries, if you post yours first-class tonight, email your image or drop it in to us before 5pm tomorrow.

One lucky animal will get the title of Pet Idol 2005 - and it could be yours!

More than 100 furry and feathered friends are already in the running.

There are lots of cats and dogs - but also more unusual animals, such as a sheep, a parrot and a chicken!

Sadly, we had to disqualify robotic- looking birds Holly and Polly.

Nice try, Jack Matthews, of Dalton! Our only criterion is that your prized pet must be a living, breathing, animal.

Examiner editor Roy Wright said: "Our readers love their pets and this is a chance to put them in the spotlight.

"In next Monday's Examiner we'll print a photo of each one. Readers can then vote for the one they like best."

Roy, a proud owner of glossy black cats Cleo and Shadow, added: "So many families have a dog or a cat. But it's been great to see all creatures great and small entered in our competition.

"If you haven't dug out that cute picture of your pet yet, do it now!"

Louise Phillips, of Golcar, whose daughter Fern is pictured here with Helen the hen, says: "A hen might seem an odd pet but she adores Fern and follows her everywhere, like a little dog.

"We have ferrets, geese, ducks, fish and rabbits, too!"

Send a picture of your pet - you don't have to find a photo with yourself on, too - to Pet Idol, Examiner Display Advertising Department, PO Box A26, Queen Street South, Huddersfield HD1 2TD.

Don't forget to add your name and address, phone number and the pet's name. We can send your photo back if you enclose an SAE.

You can email pictures to pet.idol@examiner.co.uk or drop it into our office on Queen Street South - there's a letterbox for out-of-hours drop-offs - or put it in our competition box at Kitson's newsagents on Princess Alexandra Walk.
