A WIDOWER has vowed to raise money for the hospice staff who cared for his dying wife in her final days.

Ian Mulhall wants to help Overgate Hospice in Elland by doing a sponsored walk.

His wife Susan succumbed to a rare form of cancer at the home in January.

Ian said: “I’m doing all I can because the staff are marvellous. When you speak to them you can see in their eyes how much they care.”

Susan fell ill in October 2006 and was later diagnosed with cholangio carcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts.

Ian said: “Only 600 people in the UK get it each year.

“It’s an extremely rare form of cancer and unfortunately it’s very aggressive as well so there was no chance for Susan to have an operation or chemotherapy.”

The 56-year-old was taken to Overgate Hospice on January 16 and died four days later.

Ian, who lives in Illingworth near Halifax, will walk six miles around Ogden Water Reservoir on September 22.

The 63-year-old said: “I want to raise as much money as possible. I used to be a keen walker and I’m getting some practice in before the event.”

Ian will be joined by more than 30 friends and family, including his sons from his first marriage, Richard and Robert.
