WIND farm opponents have invited environmentalist David Bellamy and political supremo Sir Bernard Ingham to a conference about the dash for green energy.

The event is being held by the Saddleworth Moors Action Group (Smag).

The group is protesting at plans by United Utilities to erect seven 350ft-high wind turbines at a Pennine beauty spot.

The application for the wind farm at Denshaw was submitted in December - to a howl of protest.

The matter is due to be discussed by Oldham Council planners on April 28.

The conference will be at Saddleworth Civic Hall on Saturday, June 19.

A Smag spokesman said: "The threat of these turbines being sited in perhaps the most beautiful part of Saddleworth Moor sparked widespread opposition throughout Oldham and Saddleworth.

"But we are also worried about the wider threat."

A spokesman for United Utilities said: "We worked very closely with our environmental partners and carried out a thorough environmental survey, taking into account the visual impact, before choosing the Denshaw site."
