HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman has welcomed the Government's Winter Fuel Payment plan.

He said the scheme brought direct benefits to the residents of Huddersfield.

Mr Sheerman said: "I received a letter about the fuel payment program from one of my constituents, who was delighted to have received a cheque through the post.

"It is wonderful to see first-hand how pensioners are being helped during these difficult winter months."

The Winter Fuel Payment awards £200 to all households with someone over 60 and £300 to those over 80.

Five million over 70s will also get a one-off extra payment of £100 - meaning some households will receive as much as £400.

Mr Sheerman added: "Millions of pensioners are also entitled to Council Tax Benefit. However, unlike the Winter Fuel Payment, this needs to be claimed for. Almost four in 10 pensioners are missing out."
