MOTORISTS have been urged not to leave their car engines running with the keys in the ignition on cold, frosty mornings.

Last winter, thieves in Huddersfield helped themselves to cars which had been left warming up.

There have been no thefts of this kind so far this winter - and police don't want any.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "There was a real spate of these thefts last year and we don't want a repeat.

"If people want to warm their cars up to de-ice the windows, our advice is to wrap up warm and sit inside.

"Never leave them running outside your home with the keys in the ignition. If they are stolen by an opportunist thief you may discover your insurance company won't pay out."
