AN ELDERLY woman was taken to hospital after her car crashed into a tree in Thongsbridge.

The woman, aged in her mid to late 80s, crashed into the tree on Huddersfield Road, Thongsbridge, at 2.46pm yesterday.

Last night she remained at HRI where her condition was said to be “serious”.

Firefighters from Holmfirth, Meltham and Huddersfield attended and they had to cut off the roof of her green Vauxhall Astra to get her out.

Holmfirth station commander Richard Doyle said: “Her car had gone head-first into a tree. The lady was in her late 80s and she was suffering pain so we had to get the roof off and get her out on a spinal board so she could be taken to hospital. When we arrived there was a man helping her so we put a firefighter in with her as we cut the roof off.

“She has suspected spinal injuries and suspected breathing difficulties and was taken away by the paramedics.”

Firefighters were able to get to the scene and cut the roof off her car for her to be treated within 25 minutes.

Mr Doyle added: “The road was reduced to one lane while the appliances were at the scene.”
