The incident is believed to have taken place near to the War Memorial in the Huddersfield park at around 2pm yesterday.

She staggered to a nearby house for help and the emergency services were called.

The woman was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and then transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester for specialist treatment where she was said to be in a critical condition today.

Det Insp Steve Hepplestone, of Huddersfield CID, said: "Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

"It is not being treated as suspicious, but we would like to speak to a group of people who went to the park warden's office at 2.30pm yesterday."

One is a white man who is 6ft tall and has a red and white mohican hair cut.

He was with a white woman, who is 5ft tall and in her late teens, and an African-Caribbean girl who wore a duffel coat.
