A woman stole from an elderly lady she was caring for, a court heard.

Nadine Higgins, 48, took £60 while she was looking after frail Audrey Booth.

She was caught after Mrs Booth’s suspicious niece installed camera equipment at the Clayton West property.

Kirklees Magistrates Court heard that cash was taken from the Victoria Terrace home between November 15 and May 17.

During this time Higgins was looking after Mrs Booth, her duties including taking care of breakfast and other tasks around the house.

On May 17 Mrs Booth’s niece Dawn decided to have a CCTV system fitted.

James Weekes, prosecuting, said: “She thought that things were going missing from her aunt’s home.

“The camera recorded the defendant opening a drawer and then taking some money outside with her when she went to empty the bin.”

Higgins was arrested and admitted taking £20 notes on three separate occasions.

She said she knew she was in a position of trust but was addicted to strong painkiller co-codamol.

Mr Weekes said that Higgins, of Green Acres in Wakefield, was previously cautioned for theft by employee.

Higgins, who was not represented, said that she had since lost her job.

She said: “I’m deeply sorry and cannot forgive myself.”

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until August 14 and granted her bail.
