A WOMAN is fighting for her life after being involved in a serious car crash.

Three other people were hurt in the smash on Huddersfield Road in Meltham on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on a straight stretch of road just after the bends near Healey House at around 1.30pm.

A police spokesman said a man and a woman, who were in a Ford Fusion, were seriously injured in the incident.

Both were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where the woman remains in a critical condition.

Medics wanted to transfer the casualty to Leeds General Infirmary for specialist treatment but she is too critical to be moved.

A man and a woman who were in a BMW were released from hospital with minor injuries.

The road was closed between Crosland Spring Road and Meltham Mills Road while police investigated the scene.

Meltham councillor Terry Lyons said: “There have been numerous vehicles that have crashed on that road – some of which have gone over the edge and through the wall.

“Kirklees Council have done lots to try to make the road safer by putting up barriers.

“And there’s also been deaths further down on Lockwood Road. It’s a bit of an accident blackspot.”

Police continue to investigate the crash and are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who saw the crash or was in the area at the time is asked to contact police on 0845 6060606.

It happened on the same stretch of road where former soldier Gary Pedelty was killed in a head-on collision on the bends at Healey House, between Netherton and Meltham, in November last year.

His Mazda 323 was hit by a Peugeot 206, which had first clipped a Volvo.

Gary, 24, was described as a “gentle giant” and was a towering 6ft 8in.

He played for Meltham All Blacks amateur rugby league side alongside his brothers Jason and Jordan.

And he had also toured Australia, playing rugby league with the Army.

The former Honley High School pupil had served in the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment and had toured Iraq.
