A woman has had emergency surgery for serious face and neck wounds after an a horrific street attack in Holmfirth last night.

And police are investigating whether she was ambushed by a thug who left a bike in the road to stop cars.

The terrifying ordeal unfolded at around 11.45pm last night when two cars being driven by the 22-year-old victim and her 21-year-old friend were on New Road at Netherthong.

The 21-year-old woman was driving the first car and came across a mountain bike in the road. She stopped and got out to move it.

But as she did so a man ran from a bus shelter holding a glass bottle and shouting at her to leave the bike.

He then ran to the 22-year-old victim's car behind her and smashed a window.

He is then believed to have stabbed the woman in the face and neck.

Both women drove away to safety and called emergency services.

The victim was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and had surgery for deep cuts to her face and neck.

The injuries have been described as serious but not life-threatening.

Det Insp Mark Truelove of Huddersfield CID said: “We are investigating a wounding of a woman in New Road at the junction with the Oval.

“The 21-year-old woman was driving along New Road at 11.45pm when she stopped to find a pedal bike in the road.

“She started to move the bike and a man appeared holding a bottle and shouted at her not to move it.

“He then moved to the car behind hers and smashed the driver’s window and subjected the driver to deep cuts to her face and neck.”

But detectives are yet to interview the victim due to her condition. There is a possibility the injuries could have been caused during the window smashing but police believe it is more likely an attack.

Officers are carrying out extensive inquiries in the area today.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman who is investigating, said: “Widespread enquiries are ongoing into this assault today which has left the victim with serious injuries.

Detective Inspector Stephanie Wiseman at Huddersfield Police Station.

“This was an apparently motiveless attack which could have had potentially fatal consequences and we are keen to arrest the man responsible as quickly as possible.

“We believe he has previously hung around the skate park in Holmfirth and may well be known locally.”

The suspect is described as a white male, of scrawny build, late 20s to 30s, 5ft 7 to 5ft 8 tall and has dark hair.

The bike is described as a mountain bike with a blue light on the front and a red one on the rear. It is thought the suspect fled on the bike which has not been recovered.
