A WOMAN suffered from the effects of breathing in smoke when a chip pan caught fire at her home.

The 51-year-old had turned the pan on at her flat at Whinney Hill Park, Brighouse, and then became distracted watching TV between 7.30pm and 8pm last night.

The pan overheated and caught fire.

The woman escaped and carried her pet budgie to safety.

The woman was given oxygen at the scene.

Firefighters confined the blaze to the pan.
