A woman hit by a car as she crossed the road has died.

The 28-year-old Cleckheaton woman, who has not been named, was struck by a Toyota Corolla while crossing the A58 Whitehall Road at Wyke, near Harry’s Carvery at the junction with Westfield Lane.

The accident happened at 2.30am on Saturday.

The driver of the Toyota failed to stop but later attended Dewsbury Police Station.

A 43-year-old Dewsbury man was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and was released on bail.

The woman was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries but died on Sunday.
