A YOUNG woman was taken to hospital after a fire in her flat.

Police officers saw her staggering into the road in Ridgeway, Dalton, at 4am on Saturday.

They then called firefighters to the scene after seeing the blaze in her flat.

The woman, in her 20s, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters searched the ground-floor flat, but the woman had been there alone.

Leading Firefighter Bryan Rowley, of Huddersfield station, said: "We treated it as if someone was in the flat because we were not sure. But a search of the property showed it was empty.

"The damage was confined to the living-room, but the flat above suffered some smoke damage."

Fire investigation teams were called to the scene to find out how the fire started.
