A WOMAN died and two children were taken to hospital after a house fire in Leeds yesterday.
A man escaped from the blaze in Ravenscar Terrace, Oakwood, and helped firefighters recover the woman from the ground floor and rescue two young girls from an attic room.
They were all taken to St James's Hospital in the city, where the woman was pronounced dead.
A fire service spokes- man said the blaze was quickly brought under control. An investigation was under way into its cause.
He said a smoke alarm had been fitted but did not have any batteries.
He added: "People must check alarms at least once a week."
