A woman has died after she was hit by a train.

The woman was struck just before 6.15pm by the Manchester to Leeds Northern Rail Service close to Hipperholme Tunnel near Halifax.

Police were alerted and officers and paramedics responded but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The incident is causing around two hour delays for rail passengers on surrounding routes as affected rail services are delayed or cancelled.

Two trains from Leeds to Huddersfield via Brighouse were among those cancelled. Services around Bradford Interchange were also affected.

Services are expected to resume from 10pm and replacement buses have been called in to allow passengers to continue their journeys.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: “BTP Officers attended the line close to Hipperholme Tunnel East End, Hipperholme, after a report that a woman had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and West Yorkshire Police attended the incident which was reported to police at 6.14pm and is currently being treated as non suspicious. Paramedics also attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A file will now be prepared for the coroner.

The last incident comes just weeks after a 16-year-old girl was struck at the Hipperholme tunnel on December 13.
