A WOMAN protesting about the death of her daughter in Flockton's New Hall prison was arrested outside the jail.

Mrs Pauline Campbell, of Malpas, Cheshire, was detained yesterday by West Yorkshire Police after making a lone protest outside the gates of the women's prison.

Her daughter, Sarah, died at the prison in January from a drugs overdose.

The latest death at the prison was last month when Louise Davies, of Huddersfield, who was serving a sentence for arson, was found dead in a cell.

Mrs Campbell was detained when prison officials called in police.

She had been demonstrating for 90 minutes and tried to stop prison vans going into the jail.

Tony Ellis, New Hall's head of operations, said it started as a peaceful protest but developed into a blockade which was causing distress to prisoners in vehicles.

A police spokesman said a woman detained at the scene was interviewed but later released without charge.

New Hall was praised in a report by Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons last week.

But there were concerns expressed about vulnerable women and girls at risk behind the bars.
