A woman was stabbed in the arm with a needle by a man who had made taunts about her disabled young daughter.

The horrific attack happened on January 27 at St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield when the 33-year-old woman was waiting to cross the road with her daughter in a buggy.

While stood at the crossing the victim heard two men stood nearby make abusive comments about her daughter, and then felt a sharp pain in her arm a few moment later.

When on the bus she checked her arm and noticed she had been stabbed with a needle type weapon and was bleeding. She later needed hospital treatment for the injury.

Police have identified the incident as a hate crime - where a person is targeted for a particular reason such as their ethnicity, gender or religion.

Pc Michelle Linney, Hate Crime Co-ordinator for Huddersfield Police said: “This was a serious and completely unprovoked assault which we are treating as a hate crime due to comments made about the victim’s daughter who has a disability.

“Offences of this kind, while fortunately very rare, are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated either by police or by the vast majority of residents in our communities in Huddersfield.”

The first suspect  was described as white, 6ft tall, 25 to 30-years-old, and of medium build and with dark brown cropped hair which was short on top and longer at the sides. He was wearing a dark grey coat and spoke with a local accent.

SALLY CLARKE

This is a horrible attack and very sad that there are ignorant people like that living among us in Huddersfield. They are in the tiny minority.

Hopefully, someone will have seen something and will pass the info onto the police.

KERRY LIVESEY

How low can someone stoop?  I cannot believe what I’ve just read. As if it’s not already hard enough having to care for your disabled child, then to have to go through this.

DEBBIE JONES

The saddest thing about this crime is that the mother could have caught anything from that needle. The little girl having to put up with that level of ignorance in 2014 is disgusting.

JANE ELIZABETH WAINWRIGHT

I cried when I read this! I have a daughter with Down’s syndrome and get sick of stares and snide comments, but to stab someone with a needle is the pits! What if an HIV drug user had used it – it doesn’t bear thinking about.

CAROLINE M NORTH

My daughter has additional needs and pushes her pram with a doll. The amount of people who openly laugh and say things makes me so cross.

REBECCA RUSHTON

Parents who have children with disabilities – physical or learning – need to be shown respect. It’s tough enough raising children without disabilities, so don’t judge any parent or child just on face value. You don’t know anything if you have never had to deal with it.

GRAEME HANNAM

I have two daughters who have learning disabilities and we were targeted by youths in Almondbury. It is sickening.

We are supposed to live in a less discriminating time but in my eyes there is more discrimination than ever.
