A woman is in serious condition in hospital - six days after being rescued from a blazing house.

The woman is said to be “stable” in hospital after a neighbour pulled her from the house in Marsh.

And police have confirmed they are treating the fire as arson.

Ambulance service worker Ashley Scaife was the man who got the woman out of the house in Heatherfield Crescent last Saturday morning, shortly after 7am.

He said: “I saw people outside the house and one said a woman was still inside.

“There was a lot of thick black smoke on the first floor and it was hard to see, but she was on the landing and I got her down the stairs and on to the pavement”.

Paramedics treated the woman before she was taken to hospital and fire crews from Huddersfield and Rastrick fought the blaze, which caused severe damage to a bedroom.

A police spokesman said; “Enquiries are ongoing following the house fire on Heatherfield Crescent, Huddersfield on Saturday September 19.

“Firefighters were called to the property at 7.16am following the outbreak of a fire which caused significant damage to the property.

“A 44-year-old woman was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and currently remains there in a stable condition.

“Police are treating the cause of the fire as suspicious and are continuing to conduct enquiries with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
