WOMEN'S basketball team the Deighton Diamonds are hoping to set up a tournament in Huddersfield.

The team - based at the Deighton Arena - started in 1985.

The 14 members train every Sunday and play in the Leeds women's basketball league as they are the only female team playing the sport in Huddersfield.

But the Diamonds want to encourage more women into basketball - and are hoping a £2,000 from our Community Chest fund will help them do it. The team wants to set up a tournament in Huddersfield to raise the sport's profile.

Team member Elvenia Gibbons said: "We are trying to promote basketball is as a good sport for young women. There are a lot of young women who don't do sports and we hope a tournament might show them basketball's benefits."

The tournament would take place at Deighton. The £2,000 would be spent on a venue, equipment and advertising.
