A smash between two lorries closed the Woodhead Pass during the morning rush hour, causing traffic problems in the Holme Valley.

A yellow HGV collided with a road sweeper vehicle in heavy fog close to Dunford Bridge, near to the turn off for Holmfirth at about 7.55am yesterday.

The incident, two miles west of the Flouch roundabout on the busy A628 road between Sheffield and Manchester, lasted for most of the morning
causing National Express coaches to divert via the M62.

But most traffic was diverted north towards the Holme Valley causing jams on Dunford Road, New Mill Road and in and around the villages of Scholes and Hepworth.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed there were no injuries.

Highways officers initially closed only the westbound side but were later forced to close the entire road to recover the vehicles and clear a large spillage of diesel.

The route was re-opened just after noon.
