A slick production of the musical Grease is proving to be a massive hit for one of Huddersfield’s top amateur dramatic companies, with a staggering £26,000 worth of tickets sold.

Woodhouse Musical Theatre Company has packed audiences into the Lawrence Batley Theatre this week, with its colourful production of the show set in the 1950s.

Only a handful of tickets are left for the Saturday matinee.

The company’s chairman, Alan Warmby, said: “It’s a record-breaking show for us and by the end of the week about 2,300 people will have seen it which is brilliant.

“It’s the success of shows like these which help to keep groups such as Woodhouse going and, coincidentally, Grease was screened on TV the night we opened at the LBT!

“It has mainstream appeal but we also keep our ticket prices reasonable at between £10 and £14.

“We have a reputation for putting on good quality shows and have a very loyal following.”

And Grease remains ever popular with audiences.

“People have been clapping away and some have been on their feet dancing in the aisles,” said Alan.

Laura Rodwell, press and marketing manager at the Lawrence Batley said: “It’s amazing to see so many talented people filling the main stage.

“There was a real buzz and excitement in the theatre last night.

“It’s a very popular show and lovely to see local people taking an interest in local theatre.”

The show has a cast of 30 but more than 80 are involved in its production.

At the core of the team are producer Richard Hakier, who is making his debut in the role, choreographer Cathy Peters, musical director Jon Wilby and stage manager Nigel Hatch.

Leah Stansfield from Bradford plays the lead role of Sandy with Scott Armstrong from Huddersfield as Danny.

The show finishes tomorrow.
