A LARGE fire smouldered in woodland off Redwood Drive in Bradley for hours before anyone reported it.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 7.00 last night and found a large chunk of woodland 50ft by 50ft on fire.
While they were tackling it, passers-by told firefighters the woodland had been on fire for much of yesterday.
Sub-officer Andy Medlock, of Brighouse fire station, said: "It was difficult to fight the fire in the pitch-black at that time of night.
"It would have been nice if someone had thought to have reported it sooner.
"As it was, it had burned large tree roots away and if the wind had whipped up it could have put nearby homes at risk."
