A teenage cook is set for a glamorous career after landing a job at a world-renowned hotel.

Michael Lalousis became a commis chef at The Savoy in London after completing a cookery vocational qualification at Kirklees College and doing a week-long work experience placement, writes Stoyan Dimitrov.

The 19-year-old, from Mirfield, was offered a week’s work experience at the London hotel near the end of the pastry and confectionery course.

He said: “I jumped at the chance and though it was hard work I thoroughly enjoyed the week.

“At the end of that week, the head chef said that he would like to offer me a full-time job as a commis chef.

“I was really happy to accept and am really looking forward to learning all I can.”

Kirklees College tutor Simon Hellas said he was delighted with Michael’s success.

“He worked really hard on the course and this is his reward,” Mr Hellas said. It is a fantastic opportunity for him to work with some of the best chefs in the business and for him to learn his trade.”

Michael said the best thing about the course was his tutors, adding: “Each and every one inspired and motivated me to be the best I could be.

“I am really grateful for the teaching and the opportunity they offered me, without which I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
