WORK on a new community park in Meltham is due to start in the next couple of months.

The project aims to redevelop a derelict site off Heys Crescent.

Tenders are now being invited to landscape and redesign the land to make it suitable for residents of all ages.

Seating, pathways and an adventure playground are all planned as part of the scheme.

The land, near Broadlands and behind the local Baptist Church, has become heavily overgrown and used as a dumping ground in recent years.

Meltham Town Council and the Countryside Agency have teamed up for the project.

The town council has leased the land from Kirklees Council by establishing a company, Meltham Environment Limited, to develop and manage the project in the long term.

Meltham Town Council clerk Pat Radford said work on the project was due to start in the spring.
