WORK has begun to stop an island in a Batley park sinking into a lake. Kirklees Council staff have started stabilisation work on the island in Wilton Park. The work will also mean that the ornamental fountain on the island will be secured. The island has suffered from years of water erosion. The work will put mesh and materials around its edge to prevent further slippage into the lake. The land around and underneath the disused fountain will also be secured. A temporary bridge is being used to get workers' machines to the island. Parts of the island's perimeter footpath will also be repaired. The work is expected to be completed by the end of March.
