AN ARMY of workmen have now moved on to the site of Huddersfield’s new sports centre.

They are hard at work clearing the site and digging out foundations for the new leisure centre at Springwood.

A fleet of lorries has been going to and from the site with waste from the former car park .

The new centre will be owned by the council and managed by Kirklees Active Leisure.

It will replace the existing sports centre in Southgate, which will be one of the buildings in the area also off Leeds Road and Old Leeds Road to be demolished to make way for a new Tesco store.

The centre will be open to the public in 2015.

The £36m bill for the new centre will be funded by a combination of cash from the sale of the existing site and additional council funds .

Kirklees Council claim those funds would otherwise have had to be spent on repairs to the current sports centre and other buildings, running into millions of pounds.

Facilities in the new centre will include a 25-metre swimming pool, a teaching pool, two sports halls, climbing, squash and martial arts facilities, a large fitness suite and a café and children’s area.

It will also have a family leisure water facility, including a beach, flume, “sidewinder” and several more water features.
