QUICK-THINKING workers stopped a fire at a joiner's shop spreading.
As soon as they realised a sanding machine was on fire at DF Joinery at Field Mills, Red Doles Lane, Bradley Mills, they tackled it with a dry powder extinguisher.
As the flames threatened to spread to the ceiling at 8.30am yesterday the staff pointed a water extinguisher at the roof and kept it cool until firefighters arrived.
Watch Manager Alan Woodcock, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "They did a magnificent job, which meant the fire was confined to the machine. There was a lot of timber in the place and if the fire had spread to that it would have been far more serious.
"The dust extraction system was then dismantled to make sure the fire was fully out."
Firefighters used a giant fan to blow the smoke out of the single-storey converted mill.
