WORKERS in Huddersfield are among hundreds fearing for their jobs after music and video store MVC went into administration.

Administrators say sales have been hit by competition from supermarkets, pirated CDs and DVDs and downloads from the internet.

The 73 stores across Britain - including one in Huddersfield town centre - will continue trading over Christmas.

MVC has 700 staff and a turnover of about £120m. Administrators Kroll said: "The intention is to continue trading the business throughout the Christmas period without interruption and there are no plans for redundancies at this stage.

"All employees will continue to be paid and wages going forward will be paid as part of the administration."

Kroll added it was "hopeful" a buyer for MVC would be found.

The statement said MVC was suffering cash flow difficulties as a result of "competitive trading conditions".

MVC was spun out of Woolworth's in August in a management buyout worth £5.5m.

Today's fall into administration came just days after MVC agreed to sell 40 stores to rival Music Zone, but the deal is now being reviewed by the administrators.

Kroll administrator Andrew Pepper said: "The stores remain open and are well stocked and we hope our customers will support us."
