Schools across Huddersfield organised events to mark World Book Day.

Children at Spring Grove School were treated to a visit by Helen Pielichaty, author of ‘’Football Mad’’ and the Huddersfield Town reading journal.

Year 5 pupils won a Huddersfield Town competition to create a caption for the reading journal, which they use at home to record their reading.

‘’It was a wonderful opportunity to meet someone who makes a living from writing and to find out what motivates them to keep reading’’ said Mrs. Jeanette Vaines Literacy and Language Leader at the school.

At Kaye’s First School in Clayton West, events included dressing up as a book character- staff, a book swap and a visit from Huddersfield Town player, Paul Dixon, who visited school to talk about reading, with a question and answer sessions and read a story to the younger children.

At Royds Hall High School, the day was marked with a competition held for students to match front covers.

Every member of the English department dressed as famous character from book and 35 students who had excellent in reading/English were invited to special Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

Performance Poet Gez Walsh entertained staff and students.

Parents and their toddlers received free Bookstart reading parks to mark World Book Day celebrations.

To promote the Kirklees Council-supported launch, the free packs were handed out at the Children Place Nursery in Ravensthorpe.
