The world’s fastest marching band is hoping to win another accolade – this time for its quirky method of fundraising.

The Huddersfield Marathon Band, which holds the world record for the fastest band to complete a marathon, has been shortlisted for Just Giving’s Creative Fundraiser of the Year award.

The 31-strong marching band completed the 2014 London Marathon in 6:56:44 to regain the world record for ‘the fastest marathon by a marching band’.

In the process the band raised £68,000 for Sense, a charity for people who are deaf and blind.

Formed at Huddersfield University in 2011, the band set the record for the fastest marathon by a marching band while raising £37,500 for the charity.

The band’s record was broken by a German band in 2012, but Huddersfield Marathon Band regained its title on April 13 by slashing an hour off its original time.

Band founder and director Mike Lomas said: “I am very excited to get to the final.

“It was a surprise; we had no idea it was happening.

“I hope we win but we are against some other fundraisers who fundraise in very different ways.”

Huddersfield Marathon Band hosts its awards evening at Huddersfield University Central Services Building, on July 25 from 6pm.

The band will be announcing its next challenge on the night.
