Gala organisers are hoping for good weather tomorrow for a spectacular flypast by one of the world’s oldest spitfires.

The forecast seems set fair for Spitfire P7350 Mark II to soar above Upperthong Carnival.

The event, dubbed the Big Thong Ender, is held at Upperthong Cricket Club in Dean Road.

The Spitfire and a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are due to fly over at 1.50pm, weather permitting.

Steven Taylor, chairman of Upperthong Village Hall Committee, which organises the carnival, said: “The forecast is good and we are looking forward to it. It is all about the wind direction.

“This particular plane is no ordinary Spitfire. It is one of the world’s oldest and was involved in the Battle of Britain. We are lucky to get it.”

The Spitfire is the one that wartime plane spotters always want in their notebook and Mr Taylor expects a big turn-out.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is the RAF’s tribute to the pilots and crew who flew in the Second World War. The flight consists of several Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Dakota and a Lancaster.

Spitfires cost £800 an hour to keep in the air and the carnival will make a donation towards the flypast.

“This plane is very rare – priceless in fact – and to have it come here is a big honour,” said Mr Taylor.

“We expect a lot of the Spitfire aficionados to come out to see it. It will come from the direction of Penistone and the best place to see it will be the cricket field.”

Admission to the carnival, which will have stalls, activities and entertainers, costs just £1 with proceeds to the memorial flight, the village hall and local charities.

The Big Thong Ender is renowned as the home of the World Welly Wanging Championship.
