The take up of electric cars in Huddersfield could be stalled - by a lack of charging points.

New figures show many people in Kirklees face a half hour drive just to reach the nearest place to power their car.

And drivers in Holmbridge are, on average, as far as 13.6 miles away from a charging point.

Data from the Department of Transport shows average distances to charging points which are open to the public.

It shows many parts of the region are more than 11 miles away from the nearest.

The Government has pledged its commitment to electric cars, and in January announced a £40m fund for a ‘green car revolution across UK cities’.

But the latest figures raise questions about whether it is worth people in Kirklees owning an electric car, with some residents around Holmbridge facing a 27 minute drive at 30mph to get to the nearest charging point.

It’s not just the more rural areas that are being left behind with parts of central Huddersfield not particularly well connected either.

Many people living closer to the centre of town are on average 5.5 miles, or an 11 minute drive, away from the nearest charging point.

It compares badly with the rest of the country. The average neighbourhood in England - including rural areas - was just 3.8 miles from a charging point.

Several websites now show lists of available charging points across the region, which include Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, some supermarkets and a number of hotels.
