A man high on alcohol and drugs resisted staff when they tried to stop him stealing three bottles of Pimms at the Co-op in Marsden.

Andrew Burton had already aroused suspicion by his behaviour on the afternoon of June 1 as he was walking round the store, James Weekes prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court.

He gathered items in a basket but then put them down and claimed he was waiting for his girlfriend to come and pay for them.

One member of staff went near the door because of their suspicion and then saw him grab the bottles as he was leaving.

She snatched two back but he then struggled with another member of staff who took the third bottle from him and was trying to get it back from her and in the process she was pushed and said he knew where she lived.

Glenn Parsons representing him said when he later was shown CCTV of the Co-op incident he was disgusted with his behaviour.

Burton, 35 of Spruce Drive, Netherton, admitted attempted robbery and was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years with 200 hours unpaid work.
