NEW YEAR’S revellers should wrap up well.

The weather around midnight and the early hours of New Year’s Day will be a chilly affair, with temperatures falling to 2º or 3ºC, according to Salendine Nook weatherman Paul Stevens.

The rain predicted for New Year’s Eve daytime should clear away, bringing in colder weather with a wintry feel.

New Year’s Day will bring a mixture of sunny spells and showers, some of them falling as sleet or even light snow on the hills above 700ft.

Walkers hoping to blow away a few cobwebs should get out their thermals and not be surprised to see a light covering of slushy snow underfoot, said Mr Stevens.

The good news is that the current wet and windy weather appears to be coming to an end. Although yet to be confirmed, it looks like 2012 will be the wettest year on record for Huddersfield.

Early January will see a bit of respite as high pressure and more settled weather moves in from the south west.

The first few days of the new year should see fairly mild and dry, cloudy weather. However, cold weather is set to move in from the east for the second half of January and drivers are advised to make sure they have enough anti-freeze and de-icer.

Mr Stevens added: "There will be some interesting developments in mid January. The cold weather coming from the east will be a thing to watch."
