A MISSILE was hurled at the windscreen of a train as it passed through Marsden.

British Transport Police (BTP) have launched an investigation and issued a stark warning following the incident on Monday.

An object is thought to have been thrown from the Grange Street bridge shortly before 5pm.

It hit the windscreen of the train, which was on its way from Manchester Airport to Scarborough, but did not cause serious injuries to anyone on board.

Investigating officer Sgt Peter Shaw said: “Luckily no one on board the service was injured.

“However, this dangerous incident understandably left the driver shaken.

“We urge those who think that throwing stones and other objects at passing trains is fun to consider the consequences of their actions, which could have been much worse.

“Offenders who throw objects at trains not only risk seriously injuring passengers and staff but are risking a prison term.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Marsden area, to come forward.

Meanwhile, Northern Rail has launched a surveillance vehicle that will roam its network, aimed at reducing crime on trains and in and around stations.

The mobile CCTV surveillance vehicle was introduced following an initial trial, and will be used by rail response team officers.

It is equipped with four state of the art CCTV cameras, with 360-degree viewing and recording capability.

The vehicle will be deployed to cover large scale events, such as football matches, as well as to patrol stations and car parks where no CCTV is currently available.

Gary Stewart, safety and assurance director for Northern Rail, said it was designed to act as a deterrent to as well as to respond to criminal activity.

He added: “We wanted to deliver a totally flexible solution for our business. With over 460 stations it is not possible or necessary for us to install CCTV at all of these locations.”
