A BUILDING society with roots in Huddersfield is urging people to use their small change to make a big difference to local charities.

Yorkshire Building Society is launching its Charity Choices programme today at its branches in Lindley, Meltham, Slaithwaite and Waterloo.

Anyone can call in and vote for their favourite charity to receive a cash donation.

Each branch has £1,000 to give away and staff at each one have selected three different charities.

The number of votes received by each charity by the end of two weeks will determine the amount of money each receives.

The one with the most votes will receive £500, the second £300 and third £200.

The charity drive is supported by the Bradford-based mutual’s charitable foundation, which is funded by the Small Change, Big Difference scheme in which members donate from the interest they receive on their accounts..

The scheme has helped the foundation to donate about £800,000 to more than 300 local charities.
