Research by Sykes Cottages placed God's own county in the number two spot, pipped to the top of the beauty chart by Cornwall.

Cornwall took 19.7 per cent of the vote, praised for its stunning coastline and historic countryside.

Yorkshire won 18 per cent of the vote, with Cumbria placed third and Devon fourth.

Here's the top 10 most picturesque counties in England, according to the poll:

  1. Cornwall (19.7%)

  2. Yorkshire (18.2%)

  3. Cumbria (11.5%)

  4. Devon (11%)

  5. Kent (4.6%)

  6. Derbyshire (4.5%)

  7. Northumberland (4.1%)

  8. Dorset (3.9%)

  9. Isle of Wight (3.2%)

  10. Gloucestershire (3.1%)

Tom Lowes of Sykes Cottages said: "Yorkshire is also still riding high from the Tour de France last year, and the Tour de Yorkshire in May will no doubt bring more people to the county."

Yorkshire was a particular favourite among the 18-24 year age group and Yorkshiremen and women themselves.
