FOREIGN drivers who speed on Yorkshire’s roads should be fined, a politician has said.

Continental motorists are currently able to go over the limit in Britain, safe in the knowledge that any speeding ticket they get from being caught by a speed camera will not be enforced.

Yorkshire Euro-MP Linda MacAvan has criticised the Government for opting out of a plan which will allow countries across the European Union to punish driving offences by foreign motorists.

The Labour woman said: “The Government must rethink its stance on this issue.

“Across Europe we see other countries co-operating to make their roads safer, but Britain is refusing to act.

“The decision is outrageous if we consider the 79,000 offences committed on UK roads every year by foreign drivers that will continue to go unpunished.

“The Government is putting political dogma before people’s safety on our roads,” added the Euro-MP.
